2016 – a vintage that began painfully with a springtime frost on the morning of 27th April that destroyed more than half the crop in the Côte-d’Or.
Our domain was relatively spared, with an overall loss of 30%, but very variable as a function of different parcels: the Vosne Romanée village was untouched, as well as the parcel of Fontaine Saint-Martin. In the Clos Vougeot, at Nuits Saint Georges and Chambolle Musigny, almost half the new buds were destroyed. Lastly, 8 hectares in the Hautes Côtes were 75% affected.
The month of May was also very difficult, with high rainfall and low temperatures. Mildew was very aggressive.
June was hardly any better. Fortunately, good weather arrived in July and was to last right until the end of a harvest that was very late, due to the delays encountered in the early season.
Our harvesting began on 28th September in the Côte de Nuits and we ended on 9th October up in the Hautes Côtes.
The month of September largely explains the quality of this vintage. Temperatures were 2.5°C higher than normal, with generous sunshine levels. These were almost summer season climatic conditions.
The very lovely late-season allowed ideal ripening of perfectly healthy grapes.
The wines are superb with deep colour, very good balance and very pure aromas. Fortunately, the frost had no bearing on quality. On the contrary, for the vine parcels where the crop was reduced, the wines are even more concentrated and expressive.
